Baby Powder Ovarian Cancer Lawyers & Lawsuits: Atlanta, Georgia

What are the Dangers Associated with Baby Powder?

Although baby powder seems like the most benign of products, the talc in baby powder has been found to cause ovarian cancer when used by women for feminine hygiene purposes. Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder with talc was developed in the 1890s, however, by the 1930s, it was found that surgeons who used talc powder on their surgical gloves caused inflammation of the abdominal organs during peritonitis surgeries—inflammation that could lead to cancer. In the 1970s, researchers found talc fibers deeply imbedded in the ovarian and cervical tumors they removed. It was theorized that women who used baby powder with talc for purposes of feminine hygiene could end up with ovarian cancer after the talc fibers migrated through the reproductive system to the ovaries.

By the 1980s, scientists had definitively found that women who used talcum powder for feminine hygiene purposes had double the risk of ovarian cancer. A decade later, scientists found that women who applied talcum powder to their sanitary napkins significantly increased their risk of ovarian cancer. Around this time, the majority of talcum powder manufacturers stopped using talc in their powders, switching over to cornstarch, to ensure the safety of consumers. While Johnson & Johnson also manufactured a powder with cornstarch, they continued to market their talc-based products as well, including Shower to Shower and Johnson’s baby powder with talc.

Where Does the Baby Powder Ovarian Cancer Litigation in Atlanta, Georgia Stand?

There are currently approximately 20,000 lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson from women who developed baby powder ovarian cancer after using J & J’s talc-based products. The first lawsuit against J & J was filed by Deane Berg in 2009. Berg was offered a confidential settlement by J & J, which she declined because she wanted all women to be aware of the dangers of J & J’s talc-based products when used for feminine hygiene purposes. While the jury found in Berg’s favor, she received no monetary award. Since that first lawsuit, there have been a number of significant monetary awards to women who sued J & J, alleging the pharmaceutical giant caused their ovarian cancer. J & J also won several lawsuits and appealed every one they lost.

Has Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder with Talc Been Recalled in the United States?

On May 19th, 2020, Johnson & Johnson announced they would discontinue manufacturing their talc-based products in the United States and Canada, however, they still refuse to admit their product is unsafe in any way. A J & J spokesperson claimed the reason for the discontinuation of their talc-based product in the U.S. and Canada was due to changes in consumer habits and fueled by the “constant barrage of litigation advertising.”
