What Evidence Links Talcum Powder and Ovarian Cancer?

The Plaintiffs, the Defendants, and the Clinical Studies

May 06, 2020 - Have you been diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using Johnson & Johnson baby powder with talc or Shower to Shower with talc? Have you been diagnosed with mesothelioma after using Johnson & Johnson baby powder with talc (which could have possibly been contaminated with asbestos as well)? If you are suffering from one of these very serious diseases, and you believe your current diagnosis is the result of Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder with talc or Shower to Shower with talc, it could be extremely beneficial for you to speak to a knowledgeable talcum powder ovarian cancer attorney.

There are currently more than 20,000 cases pending against Johnson and Johnson from women who have developed ovarian cancer after using J & J talcum powders as well as those who have developed mesothelioma after using the company’s talcum powders. This issue is even more serious because most of us were raised believing J & J baby powder with talc was a trusted brand—something we use on our babies as well as ourselves. J & J has lost a number of ovarian cancer lawsuits, with verdicts in the millions, however, the company has appealed every decision.

Many of the verdicts were reversed as a result of errors of law or venue issues (none have been reversed based on the scientific data). It is expected that since asbestos was found in certain lots of J & J baby powder with talc, the lawsuits will continue to increase. Those with ovarian cancer or mesothelioma caused by J & J baby powder should seek the necessary help, both medical and legal.

What is the Best Evidence to Support a Link Between Talcum Powder Used for Feminine Hygiene and Ovarian Cancer? What brought us to this point in the ovarian cancer talcum powder litigation is forty years of epidemiological studies. When we look at the studies, many are those which have never been made public. The level of consistent association between talcum powder used for feminine hygiene and ovarian cancer is between 25 percent and 65 percent. Johnson and Johnson has argued that none of the studies are relevant, particularly the case-control studies, which are largely being ignored.

In fact, J & J claims the cohort studies are more reliable, while the remainder of the studies are statistically insignificant. Scientists have combined the studies to see whether there is a more statistically significant result, and every time this method was used, it showed a statistically significant increased risk of ovarian cancer among women who used talcum powder for feminine hygiene over a period of time.

According to Drugwatch, women have been taught to use talcum powder as a regular part of their feminine hygiene routine. Those of a certain age will remember the advertising jingle, “A sprinkle a day helps keep odor away.” Medical experts, however, assert there is no reason for women to use talc in this manner, and, in fact, it can raise a woman’s risk of ovarian cancer. A six-week trial in the summer of 2018 led to a jury’s conclusion that Johnsons’ baby powder and other talc-based products could also contain the cancer-causing mineral, asbestos.

In this particular case, the jury awarded 22 women substantial monetary damages. Of course, J & J has appealed that decision, and because the decision was particularly large, the verdict could well be reversed. Whether verdicts stand or are reversed, it seems clear that juries who have heard the evidence in these talcum powder trials believe talcum powder is responsible for causing specific types of cancer.
