October 20, 2019 - What are some of the more frequently asked questions about Monsanto Roundup Weed Killer and its link to Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and other cancers? We went ahead and assembled a list of commonly asked questions about Roundup Weed Killer:
What is Roundup? Roundup is a glyphosate-based herbicide manufactured by Monsanto. Glyphosate was developed and patented in the 70s by Monsanto, then marketed as Roundup in the mid-70s.
What is Glyphosate? As the most widely used herbicide in the U.S., glyphosate is used to kill specific grasses and broadleaf plants. There are currently more than 750 products which contain glyphosate, including Monsanto’s Roundup.
Does Roundup Cause Cancer? Roundup may cause certain cancers, including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. While glyphosate is the ingredient believed to be dangerous, some scientists believe that when glyphosate is combined with other Roundup ingredients, it becomes more dangerous.
What Potentially Dangerous Side Effects Does Roundup Have? Many illnesses and diseases have been linked to Roundup exposure, including reproductive issues, respiratory illnesses, hypothyroidism, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, obesity, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, infertility, IBD, liver disease, colitis, birth defects, diabetes, heart disease, autism, depression, kidney disease, brain cancer and breast cancer.
Are There Studies Pointing to a Link Between Roundup and NHL? Although the EPA concluded glyphosate is not carcinogenic, several studies have suggested that those exposed to high levels of Roundup have a higher risk for Roundup non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, as well as other Roundup cancers.
Are Farmers More Likely to Suffer Harm from Roundup Use? Any person who routinely uses Roundup in significant quantities may be more likely to suffer harm and injury. This includes farmers, and those in the agricultural industry, although the homeowner who regularly uses Roundup on lawns, gardens, and forestry could also receive enough Roundup exposure to cause harm.
What Do the FDA, EPA, and IARC Say About Roundup? The IARC considers Roundup “probably carcinogenic,” although the EPA and FDA have yet to come to that conclusion, believing Roundup is safe when used as directed. The EPA sets the levels of acceptable glyphosate exposure, while the FDA enforces those levels. It is believed by many that the EPA and Monsanto are not working independently of one another, making the EPAs determinations less than valid.
Are There Roundup Verdicts? To date, there have been three Roundup verdicts in favor of the plaintiffs. Dewayne Johnson was awarded $289 million by a San Francisco jury, Edwin Hardeman was awarded $80 million in Monsanto damages, and the Pilliod husband and wife were awarded more than $2 billion in damages. Monsanto and Bayer are appealing all decisions. There remain more than 13,000 plaintiffs who have filed Monsanto Roundup lawsuits.
Is There a Roundup MDL? There is a federal multi-district litigation in Northern California, although the majority of the Roundup cancer lawsuits are filed in state courts across the nation.
What About a Roundup Class Action? One Roundup class action lawsuit has been filed by six people from New York, Illinois, California, Florida, New Jersey and Wisconsin in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin.
Do I Have a Roundup Cancer Claim? You may have a Roundup cancer claim if you used Roundup and developed Roundup non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or another type of Roundup cancer.
How Much Time Do I Have to File a Monsanto Roundup Lawsuit? In the state of Texas, you have two years from the date your injury occurs or the date you discover the injury—or should have discovered the injury—to file a Roundup lawsuit.
What Damages Can I Expect in a Monsanto Roundup Lawsuit? As with any product liability claim, you could expect to be awarded reimbursement for your medical expenses, past, present, and future, pain and suffering, lost wages (current and future), and, depending on the evidence, punitive damages.
If you have been diagnosed with Roundup cancer or Roundup non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after being exposed to Roundup, you may be entitled to compensation from Monsanto and Bayer. A well experienced Roundup Lawyer will have a long history of successfully handling product liability claims and welcome the opportunity to assist you.
