What Led to the Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII Hip Recalls?
The two Stryker hip implants were approved by the FDA in 2008 and 2009, however were not aggressively marketed until early 2010. Stryker claimed their innovative new design would not only last longer than other hip devices on the market, but would be safer than other metal-on-metal hip devices, due to the use of a ceramic ball rather than a metal ball. Stryker’s target group of consumers were younger, more active patients; the design of the two implants uses a variety of components in different lengths, allowing the surgeon to custom fit the device to the individual patient, according to size, gender and level of activity. Yet only months after the marketing push, the FDA began receiving adverse event reports from patients and surgeons alike. Several surgeons who were forced to remove a Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip implant from a patient noted the appearance of what looked like “black rust” on the components.
Patients began experiencing symptoms of Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip metallosis and metal toxicity, just as patients had developed with other metal-on-metal hip implants. Stryker was finally forced to concede that the state-of-the-art designs were developing Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip fretting and corrosion at the neck junction, just like other metal hip implants. Further, following it recall, it was found that Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip trunnions, located on either end of the neck component were trapping body fluids, leading to even more corrosion. Stryker Rejuvenate/ABGII hip cross ionization was also an issue as the company paired a titanium stem with a cobalt and chromium neck, despite research stating there was a higher potential for metal ion debris shedding when mismatched metals were used.
