Understanding the Stryker Rejuvenate / ABGII Hip Recall

If you are the recipient of a Stryker Rejuvenate or ABGII hip implant device, you are probably well aware of the Stryker Rejuvenate / ABGII hip recall, issued in July, 2012. When Stryker issued the Stryker Rejuvenate / ABGII hip recall, they stated a higher-than normal risk of failure, as well as undue fretting and corrosion at the neck/stem junction which leads to the excess generation of metal ions. These metal ions are released into the body, finding their way to the bloodstream or entering the hip tissues.

Prior to the Stryker Rejuvenate / ABGII hip recall, Stryker issued an Urgent Field Safety Notification to hospitals and surgeons, acknowledging the potential dangers of the ABGII and the Rejuvenate. While the Stryker Rejuvenate / ABGII hip recall was voluntary on the part of Stryker, there was pressure from the FDA, after the agency received hundreds of adverse event reports related to the Stryker Rejuvenate and Stryker ABGII.  In the Urgent Field Safety Notification, Stryker noted certain factors which could potentially increase the risks of adverse effects such as excess patient weight, a patient’s prior history of diseases such as diabetes or infection and inadequate locking, assembly or cleaning of the components.

How the Providence, Rhode Island Metal Hip Statute of Limitations Could Affect You

As a patient with a Stryker Rejuvenate or ABGII, a DePuy ASR or Pinnacle or a Zimmer Durom, Wright Conserve THS / Profemur, Smith & Nephew R3, or Biomet M2A Magnum metal hip implant, you must be very aware of the Providence, Rhode Island Metal hip statute of limitations. Like all states, Rhode Island operates under the statutes of limitations which govern the amount of time you have in which to file a product liability lawsuit related to a dangerous or defective device or drug. In the state of Rhode Island, a civil action must be brought within three years of the date the injury occurred. You may feel you have plenty of time to decide whether you will file a lawsuit for your injuries, however the Rhode Island Metal hip statute of limitations could pass you by and prevent you from ever recovering damages. Only a qualified Providence, Rhode Island hip metallosis attorney can truly determine when your specific statutes will run.

Have You Been Exposed to DePuy Pinnacle Hip Dangers?

If you received a DePuy Pinnacle hip implant device, then you may have been exposed to DePuy Pinnacle hip dangers. When the metal components of a metal hip implant rub against one another during periods of activity, corrosion and fretting can occur, and tiny microscopic particles can shear away, causing DePuy Pinnacle hip metal debris. This DePuy Pinnacle hip metal debris can travel to the bloodstream, causing chromium and cobalt poisoning or can lodge in the hip tissues, causing DePuy Pinnacle hip metallosis. The hip implant can also dislodge, causing the limited range-of-motion.

The Symptoms Associated With Stryker Rejuvenate Hip Metallosis

The medical term for Stryker Rejuvenate hip metallosis is aseptic fibrosis or local necrosis. Metallosis may also be described as the macroscopic staining of soft tissues associated with abnormal wear. When the tiny metal particles enter the bloodstream or the hip tissues, the body attempts to fight the foreign body by sending special white blood cells to disintegrate the ions. Unfortunately, the body is unable to rid itself of the cobalt and chromium ions and ends up with a weakened immune system and high levels of heavy metals. Physicians are unsure why some people react very strongly to relatively low levels of cobalt and chromium in the body, while others will not have adverse health symptoms until their levels of the heavy metals are extremely high.

A patient with a known metal sensitivity will likely experience much more serious health issues than one with no known metal sensitivity. Stryker Rejuvenate hip metallosis can result in the implant pulling away from the bone, and failing completely. The primary symptoms of Stryker Rejuvenate hip metallosis include chronic pain in the hip, groin or upper thigh, inflammation, deterioration of bone and tissue and the necessity of Stryker Rejuvenate hip revision surgery.

Do You Have Signs of Stryker ABGII Hip Chromium and Cobalt Poisoning?

If the tiny metal particles make their way to your bloodstream, you could see signs of Stryker ABGII hip chromium and cobalt poisoning. The symptoms can be severe, or mild, and may include the following: gastrointestinal, neurological, cardiovascular, renal, thyroid or reproductive disorders, loss of hearing and vision, vertigo, short-term memory loss, the development of pseudo-tumors, changes in DNA, irritability, depression, anxiety, skin rashes, respiratory disorders and the development of certain types of cancer.
