How You May Have Been Affected by the DePuy ASR Hip Recall

If you received a DePuy ASR metal on metal hip implant you were likely very dismayed to hear of the DePuy ASR hip recall in August, 2010. Then, only two years later, in July, 2012, we heard about the Stryker Rejuvenate and Stryker ABGII hip recall. These recalls, while voluntary, were prompted by the hundreds of adverse event reports the FDA received regarding the metal hip implants. Surgeons were also very concerned about the DePuy ASR hip dangers as they were forced to remove more and more implants from their patients. Many of these implants had what the surgeons noted, looked like “black rust” on them when removed from patients.

DePuy Pinnacle Hip Dangers

Although the DePuy Pinnacle metal hip system also generated a significant number of adverse reactions in patients, the Pinnacle has not yet been recalled, and Johnson & Johnson continues to maintain there are no significant DePuy Pinnacle hip dangers. While Johnson & Johnson did discontinue the metal liner in mid-2013, the Pinnacle is still being sold. At least one DePuy Pinnacle hip lawsuit alleges the company was aware of the potential safety hazards of the device.

Stryker Rejuvenate Hip Metallosis

Many patients developed Stryker Rejuvenate hip metallosis. Symptoms of metallosis include chronic, worsening pain, significant levels of inflammation, deterioration of bone and tissue, failure of the hip implant and the necessity for Stryker Rejuvenate hip revision surgery. All metal hip devices can cause metallosis including the Stryker Rejuvenate and ABGII, the DePuy ASR and Pinnacle, the Biomet, Smith & Nephew, Wright and Zimmer Durom models. When Stryker hip revision surgery becomes necessary, the patient is subject to a longer, riskier and more expensive surgery, with a recovery time that can last as long as six weeks. The patient may be exposed to infection and excess blood loss from the lengthy operation.

Stryker ABGII Hip Chromium and Cobalt Blood Poisoning

Stryker ABGII hip chromium and cobalt blood poisoning and Stryker Rejuvenate hip chromium and cobalt blood poisoning occurs when the tiny metal ions which shear away from the devices during periods of patient activity travel to the bloodstream. As these cobalt and chromium ions build up, the patient can begin to experience symptoms of metal toxicity, such as:

·         Changes to DNA

·         Inflammation

·         Hypersensitivity

·         Loss of hearing and vision

·         Liver necrosis

·         Kidney impairment

·         Asthma and other respiratory issues

·         Reproductive disorders

·         Neurological, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal disorders

·         Depression, anxiety and irritability

·         Fatigue and the inability to concentrate

·         Changes to skin and nails

·         The development of pseudo-tumors
